THE SENTENCE:




A group of words that make complete sense is called a sentence.


There are 5 types of sentences:

* Declarative or assertive
* Interrogative
* Imperative
* Exclamatory
* Optative
 

Topic# 1      DECLARATIVE OR ASSERTIVE SENTENCES

A sentence that makes a statement or assertion (claim) is called a declarative or assertive sentence.

A statement, feeling, opinion, incident, event, history or anything.
These types of sentences end with a period (i.e full stop)
These sentences can be either negative or affirmative.

EXAMPLE:

1. His father was a lawyer.
2. The earth revolves around the sun.
3. He is a good leader.



Topic#2     INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES 

An interrogative sentence asks a question. An interrogative sentence end with a note of interrogation ( i.e Question mark).

EXAMPLE:

1. Where do you live?
2. How old are you?
3. Are you going to play cricket?
4. Who is your father?


Topic# 3   IMPERATIVE SENTENCES

A sentence that expresses command, feeling or an entreaty is called an imperative sentence.

This type of sentence always takes the second person (you) for the subject but most of the time subject remains hidden.

EXAMPLE:

1. Bring me a glass of water.
2. Be quiet.
3. Don't ever touch my phone.
4. Have mercy upon me.


Topic# 4   EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES

A sentence that expresses strong feelings is called an exclamatory sentence. Like happiness, wonder, sorrow, anger etc.

EXAMPLE:

1. Alas! he is dead.
2. How cold the night is!
3. Hurray! we won the match.
4. What a day it is!


Topic# 5   OPTATIVE SENTENCES

A sentence that expresses wish, curse, keen, prayer etc is called an optative sentence.
This type of sentence start with "may" or "wish" sometimes "may" is hidden.


EXAMPLE:

1. Wish you a happy married life.
2. Long live the king of Saudia Arabia.
3. May your team win the match.
